This module explores how urban places develop, covering complex political, social, economic, aesthetic, and technological factors that contribute to the development and evolution of urban areas. You will learn to analyse, articulate, and explain place identity, which is the distinct characteristics that define a place and differentiate it from others.

Develop your knowledge and understanding of the influence of changing political ideologies, and the interpretation of various theoretical dimensions that explain the different interrelationships between the state, society and the market in shaping of cities.

Explore the role of politics, environmentalism and activism, the barriers and opportunities for effective solutions to the environmental crisis. This module meets both Institute of Environmental Management Institute (IEMA) and Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) learning outcomes.

Understand the key theories regarding the relationship between human behaviour and place. Considering the physical and social environment and role of placemaking for improved community and individual wellbeing outcomes. Learn the techniques and methods used to evaluate the human experience of place, and the ethical issues involved.

The world is changing rapidly. Information on location helps us assess, manage, plan, and communicate such changes. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are powerful systems for handling, analysing, and visualising location-based information.

In this module you will gain experience with leading GIS software applied to a range of problems.

Develop an understanding of the conceptual and methodological underpinnings of research design in Urban Planning through a design lens.

Explore and develop the research skills necessary to successfully formulate and implement the Level 4 Dissertation/Major Research Project.

Develop a broad understanding of principles and application of planning law, and an understanding of the factors which influence and shape development plans and strategies.

Undertake a practical understanding of how the statutory plan making processes in urban and regional planning is developed.

Develop specialist knowledge and critical insight into the challenges presented in regenerating and sustainably managing historic urban places.

Learn about the complex values enshrined in heritage resources and the potential impacts of development decisions, and acquire the ability to critically evaluate diverse strategies.
