Accessibility statement
The University of Dundee is committed to making its website accessible, this statement summaries where we are and where we plan to get to
Updated on 23 January 2025
Using this website
This accessibility statement applies to the primary University of Dundee website (www.dundee.ac.uk).
This website is run by the University of Dundee. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate all of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate all of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to all of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website aren’t fully accessible:
- some pages have ARIA elements that use the same ID attribute
- some tables do not have row headers
- some images do not have good alternative text or are missing alternative text
- some PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
- some interactive tools are not fully accessible to screen reader software
- some older videos don’t have captions
- legacy sites that have been archived, but are no longer updated due to their funding terms
What to do if you can’t access parts of this website
Please contact us if you:

Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Contacting us by phone or visiting us in person
We provide a text relay service for people who are D/deaf, hearing impaired or have a speech impediment.
If you contact us before your visit we can arrange a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter.
Technical information about this website’s accessibility
The University of Dundee is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Read the University's website accessibility policy.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed on this page.
Issues with PDFs and other documents
Some of our older PDFs and Word documents don’t meet accessibility standards - for example, they may not be marked up so they’re accessible to a screen reader.
Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents.
Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.
Issues with images, video and audio
- Videos on some pages don’t have captions. We plan to add captions to all videos by December 2024. We already include captions on new videos.
Issues with interactive tools
Some interactive tools like virtual tours and maps are not fully accessible using screen readers or just a keyboard. We plan to fix or remove these components by December 2025.
Contrast issues
There are currently one issue that we are aware of regarding contrast.
- The outline that appears around certain buttons when they are focussed has insufficient contrast to be recognisable as focussed.
However, we are currently in the process of rectifying this issue, which we intend to have resolved before April 2025.
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
We provide maps for visitors on contact pages and for our campus map. These maps are not fully accessible to all assistive technology. Maps are currently not within the scope of the accessibility regulations.
Buttons or icons on some pages do not have the correct role identified, which affects how they work with assistive technology. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion (Name, Role, Value). We plan to identify and fix these by April 2025.
How we tested this website
This website was last tested in June 2024. The test was carried out by an internal team, Web Services, using a wide range of automated and manual testing techniques and tools:
- Accessibility Insights for Web - provides a detailed walk-through of both automated and manual accessibility issues
- SiteImprove Accessibility checker – provides a quick overview of issues
- Browserstack Accessibility Toolkit - provides analysis and potential resolutions for accessibility issues based on automated scans
- VoiceOver – a built-in screen reader on Mac OS and iOS
As part of a detailed accessibility audit, we selected a sample of pages to test based on ‘top task’ research that determined the most common tasks our users try to accomplish on our website. We focused our accessibility testing mainly (but not exclusively) on pages that play a key part in user journeys for the top ten tasks.
We have tested (and continue to test) the following:
- libraries of components (for existing and new design languages)
- content produced using our existing website platform
- content produced using our new website platform
- key content that lives outside our website platforms
- popular pages within subdomains (so our main templates are tested)
Other sites within our domain
There are many different subsites and systems across our domain, including our OneUniversity HR and finance system, our helpdesk system, and student-facing systems. Accessibility statements for such systems and subsites are provided locally.
A list of these third party systems can be find at the link below:

What we’re doing to improve accessibility on our websites
- Our design system includes a library of components that have been designed and built with accessibility as a core focus. This system is being rolled out across other websites and online systems allowing editors to create the best possible experience for everyone
- As part of the roll-out of a new website content management system, old inaccessible content has been replaced or archived permanently as of April 2023
- Content editors are continually undergoing training to ensure new content is accessible
- Our automated testing includes daily reports on accessibility performance changes so we can react quickly and address new or recurring issues
