National Cinemas Post-1945 module (EN22006)

This module seeks to expand your appreciation of the medium of cinema by making you familiar with a variety of national cinematic movements. We will study historical contexts in film, and the language of film criticism and analysis more broadly.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

• develop your skills in the study of film-related texts
• be introduced to key national perspectives and movements in cinema
• explore central debates surrounding the development of film genres and movements in film
• further develop your skills in essay writing and your engagement with secondary scholarly materials
   

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• show knowledge of historical concerns and their application to specific film movements
• critically engage with the key concepts of narrative, genre, and representation across national cinemas
• recognise the aesthetic techniques contributing to different cinematic movements
• demonstrate the ability to engage critically with key areas of debate and controversy in film studies

Assignments / assessment

• sequence analysis 2,000 words (40%)
• essay 3,000 words (60%)

This module does not have a final exam.
