Our English degree offers a comprehensive study of literature and the English language. You will explore literary works from the 16th century to contemporary authors. You will gain insight into the historical, cultural and theoretical contexts of literature.

This degree covers major literary genres. You will explore classics like Shakespeare and Jane Austen, and modern writers like Toni Morrison. You will also study popular forms. These include science fiction, fantasy, Gothic literature, comics, and video games.

Our English degree will enrich your understanding of literary culture. You will gain critical thinking, research and communication skills.

This degree will support you in your ambitions beyond university. You may decide to pursue a career in:

We have a lively literary culture and offer extra-curricular opportunities like:

  • Dundee University Review of the Arts (DURA)
    • which will give you a platform to publish your own critical writing
  • the student-run magazine The Magdalen
    • where you can learn about publishing from the ground up

Our English programme has a regular series of guest talks, masterclasses and workshops from the literary and publishing worlds.

Our guests have included editors at major companies like Penguin Random House, best-selling authors, and professionals working in local cultural institutions like V&A Dundee.

We also run events like poetry readings, open mic nights, and our annual Being Human festival.
