International Energy Law and Policy involves the global regulation and governance of energy resources. It encompasses legal frameworks and policies. These address the extraction, production, distribution and consumption of energy. It aims to ensure energy security, promote sustainable development, and mitigate environmental impacts.

You will learn how government decisions on the provision of energy are structured and enforced. You will also learn how the rules and agreements link together to access energy and take it to the consumer.

This course focuses on electricity and gas, with options to study hydrocarbon production. You will examine topics such as:

  • how energy is regulated
  • the legal structure of the electricity and gas industries
  • the liberalisation of energy markets

You will learn about the pressures of energy transition, such as using gas as a bridge to a more renewable power. You will also study energy disputes and dispute resolution. You will also cover the influences of environmental standards between different countries.

Studying International Energy Law and Policy LLM equips you with specialised knowledge of global energy markets, regulations, and policies. This knowledge is crucial in today's energy-dependent world.

You will gain insights into sustainable energy practices and climate change mitigation. You will also study the legal frameworks governing energy production and distribution. This expertise is highly sought after in a variety of areas. These include governments, international organisations, and private sector companies.

The course will enhance your analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. These make you a valuable asset in addressing complex energy challenges. It will open up diverse career opportunities.

You will also study:

  • the international and domestic dimensions of electricity and gas as markets integrate
  • regulatory controls over energy markets – and the space for government intervention
  • the interaction of long-term contracts and short-term markets
  • the allocation of risk between producers/generators and suppliers
  • project financing of energy ventures
  • how governments get what they want as private investors provide the service
  • the mechanisms to pass through costs or impose subsidies

You do not need to be a lawyer to take this course.

All modules are supported by a range of books and journals and other materials. There are reading lists for each module. These are made available through the University's virtual learning environment, My Dundee.
