Teaching

  • lectures
  • tutorials
  • practicals
  • seminars, fieldwork and fieldtrips
  • guided independent study
  • working collaboratively with other students

In first year, you will also have the opportunity to attend special study skill sessions. These are intended to support your transition to independent study.

Second year includes options for taking modules developing career planning and experience. These are provided by the University Careers Service.

Especially in third and fourth years, you will benefit from smaller class sizes. These will have a mixed assessment approach. These are aimed at helping you apply your learning to real-world problems and challenges.

Throughout the course, staff can help you find study sites across Scotland and in other countries. These will usually be sites which staff have research connections with.

Assessment

  • essays
  • laboratory reports and field notebooks
  • oral presentations
  • blogs
  • project reports
  • exams and in-semester class tests
  • maps and statistical analyses
  • dissertation

Coursework is the main form of assessment for most modules. No module is assessed entirely by an end-of-module exam. Some modules are assessed entirely by coursework assignments.

Modules

Students take Environmental Science as part of a foundation in their first two years, with other modules being available from the BSc and MA programmes, including Geography, Sustainability, Business, Psychology, Life Sciences and Career Planning and Modern Languages.

Levels 3 and 4 include a mix of compulsory core and optional modules.
