Teaching

In Geography we teach using:

  • lectures
  • workshops
  • practical classes
  • tutorials

You will also carry out fieldwork, both within Dundee itself and important sites nearby. These excursions typically take half a day to a full day. You will also have the opportunity to work on projects with outside organisations.

Our main residential field courses are at Levels 2 and Level 3, each lasting around a week. The Level 2 field course takes place in Scotland. The Level 3 field courses focus on giving you international field research experience.

For History we use a wide range of teaching methods, from lectures to small group discussions. Most modules in Levels 1 and 2 have two lectures and one tutorial or workshop group meeting each week. In Levels 3 and 4 you will have fewer lectures and more small discussion group meetings per week.

Study trips, including trips to local archives and museums, are an important part of the history course.

Geography modules are assessed by a mixture of exams at the end of the semester and coursework elements through the semester. Some skills-based modules focus on practical coursework.

Coursework includes different types of assignments like essays, and project and workshop reports, blogs, and presentations.

History assessments are carried out by coursework and examinations, and vary in type and weighting from module to module.
