Teaching and assessment for Geopolitics MA (Hons)

You will learn about key dimensions of the concept of an unequal world in human and environmental systems. This will cover topics like:

• development
• vulnerability
• underlying causes
• global inequalities
• pressures on environmental resources
• links to environmental hazard

This module is the introduction to studying politics taken in the first semester of first year. In it, we consider the key themes and concepts in politics in the context of contemporary Britain.

Examine two interrelated sets of challenges to the global order: the contemporary ideational debates taking place throughout the world and the main material problems that stand in the way of ensuring a sustainable standard of living for the world population.

This module explores key concepts and theories developed by physical geography in order to interpret and understand landforms, water, and landscape evolution.

This module introduce you to the key theories and contemporary issues that animate the field of IR.

The first section focuses on the processes and dynamics of cooperation and conflict at the international level.

The second section concentrates on issues of compliance with international rules and competition among actors.

This module is designed to introduce students to the methodology and practice of comparative politics.

It achieves this by systematically examining key thematic and methodological issues in the comparative study of contemporary political systems.

In this module you will explore and critique the main theoretical and methodological approaches to studying the geographies of health and disability.

It covers contemporary issues of inequalities in health such as:

• relationships between environments and places and health
• disability access and exclusion
• healthcare and support
• public health
• mental health and wellbeing

You will learn the basis of research design. You will also cover the key research methods used by both human geographers and other social scientists.

You will work through a mixture of lectures, tutorial, and other online activities. The main emphasis is a group-based project over the semester.

This module introduces students to the importance of research within physical geography and environmental science. 

We adopt a very practical and hands-on approach geared to problem-solving through a series of structured mini-projects, which each contain essential elements of the research process. 

In this module you will gain theory and practical knowledge. You will also gain experience in formulating and undertaking a field-based research project.

The world is changing rapidly. Information on location helps us assess, manage, plan, and communicate such changes. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are powerful systems for handling, analysing, and visualising location-based information.

In this module you will gain experience with leading GIS software applied to a range of problems.

You will engage in study of the dynamic field of political geography. You will learn to make connections between global, national, and local scales

You will explore tourism at a local, national, and international level. You will do this while examining the concept of mobility and how this has changed over time.

You will learn about many concepts related to tourism and travel. These include cultural heritage, eco-tourism, and Scottish tourism.

This module will help you prepare your dissertation in either geography or environmental science.

You will learn about the broad conceptual and methodological frames behind geography and environmental science.

You will learn how these inform their study and practice

Through this module, you will develop your confidence in working with data. You will gain the knowledge needed to decode information.

You will cover a range of statistical techniques. These will allow you to understand patterns and present insights from the data we are working with.

This module provides the opportunity to undertake fieldwork in a new environment and to develop skills in field research.

You will design, undertake, and write-up a piece of research.

You will acquire the skills and confidence needed for your 4th year research dissertation.

You will learn about the United Nations' place in contemporary international relations.

You will also explore both the impact and the limitations of the UN in the post-1945 international system.

This module offers both theoretical insights and practical perspectives on the phenomenon of nationalism.

Students will develop a robust understanding of prominent theories of nationalism, as well as explore associated topics including conflict, self-determination, minorities, citizenship, ethnicity, gender, and globalisation.

You will focus on normative debates within contemporary political theory. This means you will explore arguments about the way the world ought to be structured. This is rather than analysing how it currently is structured.

Questions will focus on justice within the nation-state and in the global setting.

This module aims to engage with the research and institutions of British politics in the post-1945 era.

You will take part in a comprehensive exploration of Russia's political transformation. This will cover from the late Soviet era to the present day.

You will gain critical insights into key historical events, political developments, and policy trends. You will see how these have shaped Russia's trajectory over four decades.

You will learn about research design for dissertations in International Relations and Politics.

You will create a research design proposal tailored to your topic. You will also develop essential skills in research methodology through guided readings

Your dissertation is an opportunity to put into practice what you have learned in your degree. You will do this through an independent research project on a subject of your choosing.

You will be guided by a staff supervisor. You will also have some additional lectures on methods and writing.

This module is taught in parallel with GE32012 Geographical Information Systems.

A dissertation is an intensive academic investigation of a specific topic of your own choosing. This module aims to give you an opportunity to focus on a specific problem/question in an area of interest to you in greater depth than a regular module would allow.

You will take a closer look at how global and regional politics interact in the Middle East. This will allow you to develop a clear understanding of the intricate dynamics at play in this diverse tapestry.

This module will engage you in analysing the development of Scottish political policies and institutions in the post-devolution era. You will engage with the key debates in Scottish policy-making and learn how to write and analyse your own policy-reports covering contemporary Scottish issues.

Gain a practical and grounded experience of politics, negotiation and policy-making in the European Union.

The module begins with introductory lectures which are then followed by a series of role-play sessions where negotiations within the Council of Ministers of the EU and the European Council are simulated.

The module combines theory and practice to introduce you to theoretical debates and controversies in human rights advocacy and real-world experience of running an advocacy campaign.

The aim of the module is to help you to learn by reading, reflecting, and doing.
