Graduates with a degree in any area can complete an English LLB in two years. You can then proceed towards qualifying to practise Law in England and Wales or Northern Ireland. You can also qualify in other common law jurisdictions, including Canada and Nigeria. Law graduates are also well placed for a wide variety of other careers, and you will have careers sessions embedded in your course.
Our goal is to prepare you for your future career. This may be as a practising lawyer or as a professional using the skills you have acquired in another area. Dundee Law School graduates are found amongst the highest ranks of the judiciary. They can also be found as leading KCs and Magic Circle law firms, as well as in finance, the Civil and Diplomatic Services and leading companies.
Through your LLB you will learn an in-depth understanding of how the law operates both in business and society. You will also develop key transferable skills in research, analysis and problem solving. You will also learn the ability to present complex issues clearly, both orally and in writing.
Legal Practice in England and Wales
The English LLB provides valuable preparation for Stage 1 of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).
Our graduates also benefit from our partnership with the College of Legal Practice (CLP). This gives them a 10% discount on all CLP SQE preparation courses. This includes their LLM in Legal Practice.
The English LLB covers the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for the academic component of training to become a barrister.
- For more information on qualifying as a solicitor, visit the Solicitors Regulation Authority website
- For more information on qualifying as a barrister, visit the Bar Standards Board website
Legal Practice in Northern Ireland

- the National Committee on Accreditation in Canada

During your studies, teaching will be delivered through lectures and tutorials. You will also learn through independent and group study sessions, and you will be encouraged to take part in seminar discussions and debates. There is a strong focus throughout on the skills you can develop, supported by our Academic Skills Centre. You will have embedded classes throughout your degree from our specialist careers adviser.
We place a strong emphasis on teaching by subject specialists. Our engaging lecturers are chosen for their academic and research expertise. Many lecturers also have experience in legal practice.
Employability is key to all degrees at Dundee Law School.
At the University of Dundee Law Clinic, you can experience life as a working lawyer in a supervised environment. You can develop your skills, work with the community, and network while gaining valuable practical experience.
Our annual LLB Alumni Mentorship Programme enables current students to gain advice and career insights from alumni working in the area in which they wish to practice or work.
Working with our Careers Service, student law societies and alumni, we run regular workshops and seminars to help students prepare for vacation scheme applications, assessment centres and interviews.
Student law societies are very active in both providing a range of social activities and peer-support. Dundee Mooting Society runs internal competitions, hosts the annual Lord Jones Moot and sends teams to compete throughout the UK. We also have some opportunities for students to take part in international mooting competitions, for which academic credit may be given.
We also run an annual Law Fair which attracts law firms and employers from around the UK and further afield. Law firms also regularly visit for recruitment purposes.
This course can be used as part of an accepted pathway into practice as a solicitor or a barrister in England and Wales. Find out more about:
- the process of becoming a barrister, at the Bar Standards Board website.
Kevin Wahba, from Canada, travelled to Dundee as an international student and graduated in 2014 from English Law – Accelerated Program and is currently Registrar of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors.
"I consider the University of Dundee a significant part of the foundation of my success over the years and believe that any student searching for an opportunity for adventure, a quality learning experience, and the chance to make lifelong friends would be as impressed and satisfied as I am"
Student societies
Along with your studies we encourage our students to join one of our Law societies:
- The Dundee University Law Society is one of the biggest and most active societies on campus and helps build your Law network.
- The Dundee International Law Society is a student-led society that arranges seminars, debates, colloquia and presentations on international law problems and prospects.
- Our Mooting Society provides training and practice in advocacy. Each year members participate in national and international competitions, including at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
- The Telders International Law Moot Court Competition provides an opportunity for law students with an interest in public international law to hone their skills in front of leading experts and compete against teams from across Europe.
You can read more about the successes of our Law societies on the DUSA website.

“The course has allowed me to expand my academic skills and has helped to make me an attractive prospect for employers. I undertook a 3 week legal placement which allowed me to gain practical insight into the work of a solicitor and built the skills I need to boost my employability. ”
