This module covers elements of negligence such as causation, remoteness, foreseeability, and other torts such as defamation.

Governments are granted various powers to manage the state and its citizens. However, these powers are not unlimited.

This module covers the mechanisms that control the government’s use of power and the procedures that allow citizens to seek redress when they are aggrieved by government action (or inaction).

English property law has shaped the history of England and the UK. It tells us much about the distribution of power in society. This module will introduce you to significant theoretical debates about the nature of property. It also touches on the relationship between the public and private realms.

Learn why the EU was founded, how EU Law is made and how it is interpreted by member countries.

You will also study, Human Rights, the Four Freedoms under EU law, and EU Internal Market.

You will explore a number of contested areas in family law.

You will look at the relationship between the law’s recognition and regulation of family life and changing social attitudes and practices.

Employment Law covers many legal aspects of the employment relationship. This includes the legal status of different kinds of workers through to the end of the contract.

You will learn of the history of employment law to the present day. Plus how the law attempts to strike a balance between employers and employees.

This module examines the regulatory regime dealing with land use planning and development management.

Sustainable development is used as a theme throughout.

Learn aspects of Scottish criminal procedure. You will learn to analyse the development and reform of the criminal process.

You will learn some of the central aspects of criminal procedure including:

• adversarial and inquisitorial procedures
• theories of the criminal process
• evidential aspects
• the accused’s ‘right’ of silence
• the jury

When a private law dispute, whether a contract or child custody dispute, has an international element where should the proceedings be litigated?

• impediments to the prosecution of international crimes

This module opens with the consideration of legal history and historiography. You will learn the significance of legal treatises in the development of both jurisdictions. You will cover several topics in Scots and English law from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.

Learn about the concept of agency, the various types of business structures such as partnerships and companies.

Discover what happens when a business comes to an end through insolvency.

The module will explore the legal basis for taxation, including:

• international tax
• devolution of tax powers
• and prevention of tax avoidance

It will examine taxes applicable to common legal transactions such as:

• transfers of wealth
• property transactions
• and income taxation from employment and self-employment

This module is an introduction to environmental law.

Given the breadth of the subject, you will study the life cycle of energy projects. This will demonstrate relevant legal principles and highlight key elements of environmental law.

This module covers the cultural context of law through diverse mediums i.e. film, TV, and art. It explores law, legality, and justice as general things rather than specific rules and principles of regulation.

Learn different approaches to thinking about and working with law, to build upon your previous studies.

Consider how you can combine both to think about legal institutions, concepts and the discipline of Law in general.

International law influences almost every area of daily life, such as:

This module covers a range of topics to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of public international law.

You will learn about the interaction between theory and practice in company law.

Companies often encounter complex issues between their corporate constituent parts. Company law takes these into account when mitigating conflicts of interest between constituents.

In this module, major topical issues in constitutional law will be analysed comparatively.

You will be introduced to various methodologies used in comparative constitutional law enquiry. You will also look at various classifications of constitutions. After this, you will move on to focusing on topical themes in the field.

Climate change now affects areas of law far beyond environmental protection alone.

This module looks at the relevant frameworks of legislation. This is examined across international, national, and local scales.

It also includes recent disclosure rules about the impacts of climate change on corporations.

The study of Roman law offers insights into legal history, foundations of modern law, and cross-cultural understanding.

This module introduces students to the history of Roman law and some aspects of Roman private law.
