Teaching and assessment for Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology MSc

You will study the changes that happen to the human body after death. You will interpret these changes and how this information can assist death investigations.

You will also learn about the reactions of bone to stress from various sources and how to analyse the features left behind.

Forensic archaeology is the use of archaeological theory and methods in criminal investigations.

This module introduces the role of the forensic archaeologist. It introduces the use of archaeology in criminal and humanitarian investigations. It covers location and recovery of human remains, through to the court of law in the UK.

This module will equip you with knowledge in skeletal anatomy. You will be able to name and identify all the bones in the human body. This will allow you to do this whether the bones are in front of you, in a picture, or even broken.

Have you ever wondered how experts identify unknown human remains found in remote places, like a windswept hillside in the Scottish Highlands?

In this module, you’ll step into the shoes of a forensic anthropologist. You will learn how science helps uncover the stories hidden in our bones

Forensic scientists can act as expert witnesses in a court of law.

This module covers the ethical responsibilities of forensic specialists as expert witnesses. It introduces the legal and procedural guidelines and case law relevant to expert evidence.

You will also learn the importance of communicating forensic science to non-scientists.

Learn advanced forensic archaeology. You will develop skills in:

• desk-based surveys
• landscape profiling
• clandestine burial searches

You will gain hands-on excavation and recording experience. You will learn to produce court-disclosable notes, and write court-admissible forensic reports.
