About the data
HIC regional Safe Haven data is high quality granular local data with available linkage. We can provide regional access to NHS data from the following health boards: NHS Tayside, NHS Fife, and NHS Forth Valley, representing about 20% of the Scottish population. We host over 170 datasets of different types of data. We have significant resource of clinical images with over 43 million images, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Position Emission Tomography (PET), ultrasounds from echocardiograms, and X-rays. We also host datasets from the national Scottish Medical Records (SMR) held by Information Services Division of NHS Scotland, including:
- Outpatient attendance (SMR00)
- General acute hospital admissions (SMR01)
- Maternity records (SMR02)
- Mental health hospital admission (SMR04)
- and the Scottish Cancer Registry (SMR06)
We also offer synthetic data that includes demography, prescribing, hospital admissions, biochemistry, and maternity data, which you can explore on our GitHub repository: SynthEHR. This data uses real data to make an artificial dataset that contains no information about real people but follows the same patterns and structure as real data.
HIC curates a variety of health and health-related datasets including clinical, lab, and population health datasets. Please explore our available data on the Discovery portal where Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are published. We are working on automatically populating our data registry via the Health Data Research UK Gateway in the future.
Data linkage

We host routinely collected health data and can provide access to unique project data extracts within our TRE. Our expertise in data, means that we can bring together new data securely depending on your requirements. Please contact us for consultation of available data that may enhance your project data linkage. You define your cohort, and we can link electronic health records, demographics, public records or new data. Our expert team will quality assure and curate the data, and provide you access to them in the TRE as your unique project data extract.
Pain data hub

We are one of nine HDR UK data hubs. The UK wide Alleviate Pain Data Hub aims to address the unmet need in chronic pain research. We specialize in applying FAIR data principles to UK wide pain datasets, and can be seen as a ‘search engine’ for discovering existing pain data. Our TRE provides a common entry point for the Alleviate Pain Data Hub.
